Freaker’s paintings sit between abstract and figurative spaces where the way paint is applied is equally as important as the image itself. Some details are defined where others are more suggestive and evocative. These provide a rich tapestry of interwoven processes and a textural quality to the work. There are also more unusual processes generating a sense of nostalgia about moments that are both beautiful and painful. The subjects are often individuals, couples or groups of people in order to provoke thoughts of relationships or isolation. Growing up in Worcester Massachusetts, Ortiz spent much of her childhood visiting her family in Guadalajara Mexico. There she studied art with her grandfather Alfonso who was a professional portrait painter as well as with her aunt Lolita, a professional sculptor. Ortiz’s surrealist landscapes reference the cultural divide she and so many second generation Americans feel. Their narrative nature references ancient Aztec and Mayan mythology while reflecting back on current and personal events. Out of the ruins of their previous existence, these new creatures inhabit a borderland between memory and imagination. Dualities define them; they give them shape. Weaving together invented spaces with references to actual places, the paintings take both a familiar tone and a sense of the uncanny. His practice is rooted in storytelling via woodworking. De Lara immigrated from Mexico to the United States at the age of 12, and has been a DACA recipient since 2012. His research preserves, honors and propels forward traditional uses of wood while combining them with new developments in the global industry of woodworking. In his recent work, he explores the complexity and chaotic elements found in nature. Inspired by Georgia O’Keefe, Henri Rousseau and Wassily Kandinsky, Anthony’s work depicts minimalistic and overwhelming close-ups in the kingdom of nature where flora and fauna are sovereigns. Anthony’s artwork is “to highlight the abstract and surreal qualities of our natural world by using the elements found in nature, specifically the jungle, as a means to do so”. His paintings are forbidden invitations to enter the glorious, yet hazardous, realm of nature in which humanity does not seem to belong. Michael additionally has a long relationship with printmaking and has adapted print processes in his approach to other media. She creates full and elegant botanical imagery embraced by bold designs. Her compositions combine both organic and disciplined properties, allowing her work to possess a certain fluidity while still maintaining order and structure. "In my process I set the intention for healing through the potency of plants and the natural world. In setting these intentions I hope the imagery I create is transformed into a visual almost physical form of plant medicine. I want to see my work heal." Her work responds to the tensions and contradictions between the natural and built world, while exploring concepts of memory, place and the environment. Tonzi uses soft color palettes in contrast with organic and architectural forms that articulate an emotional response to such subject matter, with the intent on creating a calm space for the viewer to contemplate their own relationship to the ever-changing world around them. Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Madeleine attended California College of the Arts, where she received a BFA in Community Arts with a focus on studio art and screen printing. She lived in Oakland for fifteen years where she developed and honed her artistic practice, and has recently located to Los Angeles, where she works from her studio in Glendale. Her work responds to the tensions and contradictions between the natural and built world, while exploring concepts of memory, place and the environment. Tonzi uses soft color palettes in contrast with organic and architectural forms that articulate an emotional response to such subject matter, with the intent on creating a calm space for the viewer to contemplate their own relationship to the ever-changing world around them. Born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Madeleine attended California College of the Arts, where she received a BFA in Community Arts with a focus on studio art and screen printing. She lived in Oakland for fifteen years where she developed and honed her artistic practice, and has recently located to Los Angeles, where she works from her studio in Glendale. Utilizing clay as a conduit, Sharpe builds three dimensional forms to embody physical experience. Drawn to clay per its volatile yet mutable nature, her art practice explores the relational and ritual aspects of materiality by challenging the limitations of medium and skill. Sharpe’s relationship with clay has born an understanding of the medium as the art of impermanence. Clay is not consistent and as a result, Sharpe is in conversation with her medium, recognizing she has just as much control over it as it has over her.
