PRESS RELEASE

Skye Gallery presents a selection of works from the past two decades by internationally renowned artist, James Surls.

Works will include sculptures in metal and wood, pencil drawings, and prints. Through these different mediums, Surls expresses his relationship to both our physical and metaphysical world, as well as his unique sensibility to natural forms.

Born on April 8th, 1943 in Terrell, Texas, Surls graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1966 and from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1968. He taught at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 1968 to 1976. He then moved to Splendora, TX with his wife and fellow artist, Charmaine Locke. They lived in Splendora for over 20 years, where Surls founded the Lawndale Alternative Arts Space at the University of Houston in the late 70’s. Lawndale was a thriving artist community where he continued to teach and produce a growing body of work. In 1997, Surls moved to Carbdondale, CO, where he currently lives and works in his studio.

Surls’ sculptures, drawings, and prints appear in museums and public and private collections around the world, including The Centro Cultural Arte Contemporaneo, The country of Singapore, MOMA, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
